A Risk We Cannot Ignore
A compelling new report by the Safer Chemicals, Healthy Families coalition draws together the growing scientific evidence that chemicals are playing a key role in the incidence and prevalence of many diseases and disorders in our country, including:
- Leukemia, brain and childhood cancers, which have increased by more than 20% since 1975.
- Breast cancer, which went up by 40% between 1973 and 1998. A woman's lifetime risk of breast cancer is now one in eight.
- Asthma, which approximately doubled in prevalence between 1980 and 1995.
- Difficulty in conceiving and maintaing a pregnancy, which affected 40% more women in 2002 than in 1982.
