Preparation for Your Visit
To facilitate efficient service and treatment, we suggest the following:
- Wear loose clothing, such as shorts, sweat pants or a loose dress, for easy access to most acupuncture points.
- Bring insurance forms and cards, when applicable.
- Bring along the names and dosages of your medications, copies of any relevant test results and/or medical documents pertaining to your health concerns.
Your Initial Visit
The practitioner will ask extensive questions regarding your history, current complaints and overall health status. A physical examination will be performed, which may include pulse diagnosis, and looking at your tongue to determine its color and coating. In addition, the abdomen, back and other body areas may be palpated. The information obtained from these procedures contributes to the overall diagnosis and enables the practitioner to plan a suitable course of treatment.
Pulse Diagnosis
In pulse diagnosis the practitioner feels the patient's radial pulse in six distinct locations on each wrist, for a total of 12 pulse positions. Each position corresponds to one of the acupuncture channels, or meridians, of the body. The pulses are felt for relative strength in each position and balance in relation to the other pulses. The speed and quality of the pulses are also examined. Pulse diagnosis can yield much informaton about what systems in the body need to be addressed and which acupuncture points may be used in order to bring the body back into harmony.
