Herbal Detoxification

As a result of living on the earth at this time in history, we are all toxic. Even those living in remote parts of the globe cannot escape this fact.

"Everyone in the United States carries more than 100 chemical pollutants, pesticides and toxic metals in their bodies." - Environmental Working Group

Where do toxins come from?

In general, toxins can be divided into two groups, inner and outer. Inner toxins are generated within the body, as opposed to those originating outside the body. Some inner toxin production is the result of normal metabolic processes. Outer toxins are simply any compound that is generated outside the body and enters in from the environment.

Environmental toxins can be broadly divided into four categories: industrial, agricultural, household and medical/dental.

On a practical basis, these chemicals come from our air, foods, beverages, medicines, food additives, personal care products, cleaning products and numerous other sources.

Can my body cleanse itself?

As a result of normal processes, every working system produces pollution, including the human body. Some of the toxins that are produced are eliminated through processes naturally built into the system. In the body the 7 channels of elimination are as follows: the blood and lymphatic systems and 5 organs, namely the colon, kidneys, lungs, liver and skin.

No living system has the ability to rid itself totally from all of the naturally produced or foreign pollutants.

What are the potential benefits?

Cleansing can:

  1. Reduce the amount of harmful microorganisms (parasites, yeast and bacteria) whose presence can cause damage to your cells.
  2. Help dissolve mucous plaque adhering to the intestinal walls which interferes with nutrient absorption and harbors harmful microorganisms.
  3. Help heal pockets in your intestinal wall which allows toxins to enter the blood stream.
  4. Promote the release of toxins from tissues and organs.
  5. Encourage weight loss of "stubborn pounds" which won't be eliminated due to toxic overload.
  6. Prevent premature aging by combating free radicals which damage cells and promote disease.
  7. Strengthen your liver and support its ability to cleanse and detoxify your body.
  8. Encourage your body to alkalize (acidic bodies are more prone to disease).
  9. Improve blood circulation by reducing "clumping" of blood cells.

What do I need to do to assist the cleansing process?

  1. Follow a detoxification diet. Consume mainly lean meats, healthy fats, non-starchy vegetables and fruits. Do not eat hydrogenated fats, processed foods, sugars and artificial sweeteners, commercial dairy products, alcohol, etc.
  2. Drink plenty of filtered or spring water each day (half your body's weight in ounces).
  3. Implement changes to help decrease toxins in your personal environment. Use an air filter, purchase non-toxic personal care and cleaning products, etc.
  4. Have at least 2 bowel movements per day. This ensures that toxins that are in the process of being eliminated are not reabsorbed back into your body. If this is not happening, adjustments to your program must be implemented. Contact our Bonita office at 619.470.4714 or our Central San Diego office at 619.282.8068, and we will advise you further.

How will I feel during the cleanse?

Often, there are no negative reactions to cleansing. However, those who have a higher internal toxic load should start with a slower and more gradual approach to cleansing in order to avoid possible cleansing reactions, also known as Herxheimer Reactions. This is the temporary physical discomfort that can result if the toxins are released faster than your body can rid itself of them. This can manifest as symptoms such as fever, fatigue, diarrhea, cramps, headache, increased thirst, loss of appetite, flu-like feelings, skin eruptions or irritations. These reactions are generally short-lived, usually 1-2 days, but rarely longer than 1 week.

To mediate the process and assist in the removal of toxins, there are several techniques that can be useful including exercise, massage, saunas, epsom salt baths, enemas and colonics.
