What are acupuncture needles like?
Acupuncture needles are very fine, about the diameter of a thick hair, and are made of stainless steel. Their construction is solid, unlike hypodermic needles, which are hollow and inject substances into or withdraw fluids out of the body.
For the most part, the depth of penetration for acupuncture needles is shallow. The needles are placed into muscle tissue and are not intended to come in contact with major nerves or blood vessels.
How does acupuncture feel?
It is difficult to describe the acupuncture experience. It feels different to each individual, and the sensations may vary from treatment to treatment. Many people sense no pain at all. Some describe a mild discomfort or a "strange" feeling which is short-lived. For most, the overall experience is very relaxing.
Are acupuncture needles safe?
Acupuncture needles used today are presterlized and disposed of properly after each use. These are the same procedures followed in conventional medical settings, including hospitals. This eliminates any possible chance of infection or disease transmission.
